Can you vape during pregnancy?

Are you pregnant, struggling to quit smoking and wondering if vaping will be a better option for you?

Stopping smoking completely when pregnant is the best thing you can do for yourself and your baby. There are over 4000 chemicals in just one cigarette* and we guarantee that you do NOT want them in your body.

Protecting your baby from tobacco smoke is one of the best things you can do to give your child a healthy start in life. It can be difficult to stop smoking, but it's never too late to quit.

Every cigarette you smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals, so smoking when you are pregnant harms your unborn baby. Cigarettes can restrict the essential oxygen supply to your baby. As a result, their heart must beat harder every time you smoke.

By stopping smoking during your pregnancy:[2]

  • You will reduce the risks of birth complications.
  • Reduce the chances of your baby being born prematurely
  • Reduce the risk of SIDS
  • Your baby will be less likely to be born with a low birth weight
  • You will reduce the risk of stillbirth
  • You are more likely to have a smooth and healthy pregnancy!

We have linked the NHS website which fully outlines their guidance on stopping smoking during pregnancy. It is worth noting that if you find you are struggling to quit smoking during pregnancy, the NHS recommend nicotine replacement therapy (NRT).

NRT such as vaping doesn’t contain the 4000 chemicals we mentioned earlier. NRT contains nicotine (and the other ingredients of e-liquid which will we outline later)  and none of the damaging chemicals found in cigarettes. As such, you can clearly see that it is a much better option than continuing to smoke. Vaping helps you by giving you the nicotine you would have had from a cigarette, with none of the chemicals found in traditional tobacco.

The e-liquid used in vaping devices contains only four base ingredients: Propylene Glycol (PG), Vegetable Glycerine (VG), Natural / Artificial Flavourings and Nicotine which is optional and relatively harmless*

Find out more about what’s in e-liquid on our “What’s an e-liquid?” blog.

Cigarettes deliver nicotine along with thousands of harmful chemicals. E-cigarettes and vaping devices allow you to inhale nicotine through a vapour rather than smoke. By itself, nicotine is relatively harmless.

E-cigarettes do not produce tar or carbon monoxide, the 2 main toxins in cigarette smoke. Carbon monoxide is particularly harmful to developing babies. The vapour from an e-cigarette does contain some of the potentially harmful chemicals found in cigarette smoke, but at much lower levels.

If using an e-cigarette helps you to stop smoking, it is much safer for you and your baby than continuing to smoke*

To top it off e-cigarettes and vaping don’t produce tar or carbon monoxide which are the two main toxins found in cigarette smoke! Studies so far, show that there is no evidence to suggest that ‘passive vaping’ causes any harm to bystanders with negligible amounts of nicotine released into the atmosphere.[2]

If using an e-cigarette helps you to stop smoking, it is much safer for you and your baby than continuing to smoke.
