As you have may have heard, the UK Government are looking to introduce legislation that could potentially impact our industry’s ability to help people stop smoking.
We have been vocal in our support for stricter Government legislation in the past. VPZ still firmly believes that the introduction of tighter controls and store licensing are pivotal in protecting the huge progress that vaping has made in transforming the health of the nation. This would mean similar legislation like the one seen in New Zealand, where flavoured products can only be sold from specialist, licensed vaping stores. Introduction of legislation like this would ensure that Challenge 25 was taken seriously by all participating stores, meaning vaping is only accessible to adult smokers and vapers.
As for the flavoured products themselves, we deem them to be a necessity in ensuring that vaping is accessible to as many adult smokers as possible. Being able to offer various flavours means adult smokers are more likely to find an alternative to smoking that is suitable for them.
This is why we need your help. The UK Government is considering putting through legislation that could potentially result in only tobacco and menthol e-liquid flavours being available for purchase, regardless of the point of purchase. We deem this to be unnecessary in the Government’s pursuit of improving the environmental and social impacts of vaping, a pursuit that we support.
The wrong changes would limit our capacity in being able to positively impact the lives of smokers. Vaping continues to be at least 95% less harmful (this equates to being 1900% better) than smoking for your health according to Public Health England, Cancer Research UK, and Royal College of Physicians. Not to mention the thousands of pounds it can save them over time.
We want to be able to continue our work in improving the health and wellbeing of smokers, and with your help we can continue to do so.
